چکیده
Thank you, Haig, for the poignant introduction and kind words. I would also like to thank Jeff Murray, The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), the members of the Awards Committee, and especially Christopher Pearson. I first learned that I was the recipient of the 2013 Curt Stern Award from Christopher when I was on vacation with my family in San Francisco. I was pleasantly surprised and, frankly, was rendered speechless. For those of you who know me, you probably know that it takes a lot to render me speechless. I am truly honored and humbled to be the recipient of this prestigious honor. As Haig so elegantly outlined, Curt Stern was an outstanding scientist who conducted genetic studies in model organisms to gain fundamental insights about basic cellular processes. Namely, he used the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, to demonstrate crossing-over between homologous chromosomes shortly after Harriet

Receiving the Curt Stern Award makes me think of the year 1956, when Stern, an extraordinaryDrosophila geneticist with broad-ranging interests, becamepresident of the American Society of Human Genetics. It’s also the year I was born. During the first year of my life, Stern presided over the Society’s 10th annual meeting, in Ann Arbor. There, he delivered a presidential address entitled “On porc...

Thank you, Elaine, for that wonderful introduction and for all the support from the beginning of my faculty career. It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized with the Curt Stern Award by the ASHG, and I’d like to express my gratitude to the Awards Committee for this recognition. An award is really invested with meaning by its past recipients, and I encourage you to take a look at the list of pas...

Receiving the Curt Stern Award and being introduced by mymentor, colleague, and friend Art Beaudet are the greatest honors I could imagine. I attended my first ASHG meeting in 1991, and ASHG is the scientific community in which I grew up. I remember the excitement of discovery atmy firstmeeting because I was a graduate student hot on the trail of cloning the gene for Marfan syndrome, so it is s...
متن کاملCurt Stern on Somatic Crossing Over.
In the mid-1930s, Curt Stern was investigating why certain Drosophila mutants develop mosaic patches with different body bristle phenotypes, when he noticed a recurring pattern. In one particular cross, the offspring sometimes carried areas with one recessive phenotype (yellowish-brownish bristles) immediately adjacent to a sector showing a second recessive phenotype (gnarled bristles, known as...
